A Practical Guide to Flutter State Management

State management is the most debated topic in the Flutter ecosystem. Every few months a new package rises in popularity, and teams agonize over which one to adopt. After shipping multiple production Flutter apps at SyncTexts, we have landed on a pragmatic framework for making this decision. The right choice depends on your app’s complexity, your team’s experience, and how much boilerplate you are willing to tolerate.

Provider: The Simple Default

Provider is Flutter’s officially recommended solution for simple to moderate apps. It wraps InheritedWidget with a developer-friendly API and handles widget rebuilds efficiently. For apps with a handful of shared state objects (auth status, theme, user profile), Provider is hard to beat.

The limitation appears when state dependencies become complex. If Provider A depends on Provider B which depends on Provider C, the ProxyProvider chain becomes unwieldy and error-prone.

BLoC: The Enterprise Pattern

BLoC (Business Logic Component) separates UI from business logic through streams. Events go in, states come out. This pattern excels in large codebases where multiple developers work on the same features, because the contract between UI and logic is explicit and testable.

The tradeoff is boilerplate. Every feature requires an event class hierarchy, a state class hierarchy, and a bloc class. For a simple toggle, that is three files. The flutter_bloc package has reduced this with Cubit (a simplified BLoC without events), but the pattern still demands more upfront structure than alternatives.

Riverpod: The Modern Middle Ground

Riverpod, created by the author of Provider, fixes its predecessor’s limitations. It is compile-safe (no runtime ProviderNotFoundException), supports dependency injection naturally, and works outside the widget tree. We have found Riverpod hits the sweet spot for most production apps.

The ref.watch and ref.read API makes reactive dependencies explicit without the nesting problems of Provider. Auto-dispose providers clean up resources automatically, and family providers handle parameterized state elegantly.

Our Recommendation

For new projects at SyncTexts, we default to Riverpod unless there is a strong reason not to. Its combination of type safety, testability, and developer experience makes it the most productive choice for teams shipping on a deadline. We reach for BLoC only when the app has complex event-driven workflows (think real-time trading screens or multi-step form wizards), and we use Provider only for the simplest apps or when inheriting an existing Provider codebase.

The Meta-Lesson

The best state management solution is the one your whole team understands and uses consistently. A codebase with three different state management approaches is worse than a codebase using any single one of them. Pick one, document your conventions, and enforce them in code review.
